The top three, moment by moment

Most weddings share the same shape. Here's what sits behind each number-one pick, and where to go for the full list.

Walking down the aisle

90 couples named a bride's song. After "Can't Help Falling in Love" (9) come "To Build a Home" by The Cinematic Orchestra (5) and "A Thousand Years" by Christina Perri (4). For the bridal party, "Here Comes the Sun" and "Truly Madly Deeply" by Savage Garden were each chosen by 3 couples, and "Snow on the Beach" by Midnite String Quartet by 2. Full lists: walk down the aisle songs.

Signing the register

73 couples named a signing song, and 122 different songs came up. "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" and "A Thousand Years" were each chosen by 3 couples. Nothing else is far behind. See wedding signing songs.

Ceremony exit

After "This Will Be" (6) come "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" (4) and "You've Got the Love" by Florence and the Machine (4). See wedding recessional songs.

Reception entrances

For the bridal party, "Crazy in Love" and "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" by ABBA were each chosen by 4 couples. For the couple, "You Make My Dreams", "Where Is My Husband (Hiko Remix)" by RAYE and "You & Me (Flume Remix)" by Disclosure were each chosen by 4. First dance

125 of our 183 couples named a first dance song. After "Stand by Me" (6) come "Say You Won't Let Go" by James Arthur (3) and "La Vie en Rose" by Edith Piaf (3). 12 couples skipped the first dance altogether. See first dance songs and how to choose your first dance song.

Father-daughter dance

42 couples named one. "What a Wonderful World" and "You'll Be in My Heart" by Phil Collins were each chosen by 3, and "I Loved Her First" by Heartland by 2. Only 1 couple named a mother-son song. See father-daughter dance songs.

The last song

70 couples named a final song. "Closing Time", "Dog Days Are Over" by Florence + the Machine and "Love Story" by Taylor Swift were each chosen by 3. See last song of the night.

How to use a list like this

Popular doesn't mean right. The top song at each moment was chosen by a handful of couples out of 183, and most songs were chosen by one. Use the counts as a starting point, not a rule.

  • Pick the moment's job first. The aisle, signing and exit songs each need a different feel: slow and warm, soft background, then upbeat. Pick something that fits the moment. Going classic is always better than going new. You can't beat the clichés. There's a reason they're clichés.

  • Check the version. Acoustic covers, instrumentals and live versions often suit a ceremony better than the original studio track.

  • Check the lyrics. Read the full lyrics of every song before it goes on a run sheet, especially for entrances and family moments.

  • Pick one song, not two. I would always pick one song over two for a moment like the aisle.

  • Know your key songs from your must-plays. Key songs are things like the bridal party entry, the bride's entry and the first dance. Must-plays are separate: dance floor songs and others we won't play through the day. We usually ask for 5 to 15 must-plays, often songs from gigs you've been to or shared moments together. A general playlist gives us the vibe, but the must-plays hit the nail on the head.

The part after the songs

Songs only work with good timing. Our wedding reception timeline shows where each moment sits in the night. If you're weighing up who plays it all, see wedding DJ cost in Adelaide and wedding DJ hire.

We're not function DJs. We're DJs who play functions. We take the music you love and blend it with the music your crowd loves, so your must-plays land where they should.
